One of my favorite questions to ask is why so today’s topic will be my explanation. People do things for many reasons but knowing why will only help them be more successful doing whatever it is. Simon Sinek literally wrote a book called “Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire” in 2009 then another called “Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Discovering Purpose for You and Your Team” in 2017. Personally, I feel the purpose of giving the why before the “what” and “How” is not to only get perspective, but to gain clarity. Everyday I challenge myself to push a little more and define my why a little better. So far this is what I’ve come up with. Enjoy! July 14th, 2016 the rotation of my world changed, I lost my Father to Diabetes. He struggled his whole life working to create a vision for himself that no one else could take. Without a college degree, he and my mother started a business in which he worked daily; literally till the day he died. He worked hard, he never quit, and regardless of what came his way he stayed positive. I can remember calling and talking to him and somehow, he left me more encouraged even while he had so much going on. His response to everything was “Jas, no matter what, everything will work out, it’s going to be okay.” My father taught me 1.) Find what you’re passionate about; then do that. 2.) Ask the tough questions, you never know what you’ll learn, and 3.) Find what makes you happy and hold on to it. February 18th, 2018 the rotation of my world changed once again, I lost my Grandmother to Cancer. Without a college degree, my grandmother worked government contracts for the military until retirement and was one of few civilians to receive a Medal of Honor for going above and beyond duty for the 63rd RRC Army Reserve. She was one of the most encouraging and resilient people I knew. I remember our coffee dates and movie nights where she never failed to drop some knowledge on me. We would literally lose time talking. As one of the most important people in my life She taught me 1.) I can do anything regardless of the boundaries, 2.) Study and refine my skills, and 3.) Be the best, build character and work hard till the end. April 23rd, 2016 the beat of my heart changed; my nephew was born. As I watch him grow and learn daily, I am inspired to be the best example for him I know how to be as an Aunt. I tell him every chance I can, that he makes my world better. Each day I am awestruck with the new things he has learned and how he can articulate along with his excitement level when trying something new. He has taught me a new perspective and given me true joy. With this said, my goals are simple
1.) Do what I am passionate about, 2.) Be the best doing it and 3.) Make the world a better place in the process. My passion defines me in all that I do and I choose to be a bright light to those around me. I have learned that never giving up on something that makes me happy is absolutely worth it, no matter the obstacles and some of my defining characteristics are to D.R.E.A.M. Determination = firmness of purpose; resoluteness. Resilient = able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. Encouragement = the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope. Ambition = a strong desire and determination to achieve success. Motivation = The reason(s) one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. As for now I have my why, even though it is constantly being made better every day. My challenge to you this week is to take some time and truly think about your why. What defines you? What characteristics do you hold close to heart? It is perfectly okay if you have a hard time defining it, I do too at times. Please feel free to comment below and leave your why, or even just your thoughts. I’d love to hear from you. Have a great week and until next time!
